Lower Sepic Mask
Circa: Post WWII
Boldly designed with shells, white chalk outlines, red pigment and fringed with fiber, this strongly carved mask captures the spirit of Papua New Guinea and makes a significant statement on display.
Size: 30 x 12 x 51/4 inches
Traditionally, masks are carved in memory of family ancestors. When the carving is completed it is believed to contain the ancestor's spirit. The spirit protects the family and thus is hung in the living quarters.
